We’ve been slowly getting over our jet lag. There was a public holiday on Thursday (Ascension Day), so we didn’t have to go to our German class. Instead, we slept for about twelve hours and woke up feeling refreshed, finally. Since we felt well-rested and didn’t have much planned for the day, we decided to go on our first run in Munich.

One of the reasons why I fell in love with the apartment we are staying in, was it’s proximity to the river and what looked like some awesome trails. We have already explored the trails during an evening walk a couple of days ago. We are staying close to a small park called Flaucher, which has a number of gravel beaches, beer gardens, playgrounds, and, of course running paths. Since today was a holiday, the waterfront was flooded with people. There were many runners out as well. I wore a shirt I got from one of my races–the San Francisco marathon where I ran a half-marathon last year–and it drew a lot of attention, for some reason. But people were super friendly and there were runners of all levels and ages out on the paths.

The trails run along Isar all the way through Munich, so if you are out for a long run, you get to see quite a bit of the city. A number of landmarks and sights are right on the river (Deutsches Museum, Alpines Museum, Maximilianeum, English Gardens, as well as many churches). There are some vendors along the trail selling beer and snacks, but I would still bring your own water as there are not water fountains in Munich. You have a choice of trails as well: paved or dirt with fine gravel, and out in the open along the river or in a shade under the trees along the bank. Also, the city is pretty much flat, which together with nice shaded soft dirt paths would allow for pretty easy-going long runs.

Since we are still recovering from our last race, our run was pretty short: we stuck close to our neighbourhood and did a quick 9k. We brought Dwayne’s iPhone along and above are some of the shots we took.
