Munich while on a Run

I have not been running as much as I usually do since our arrival to Munich. But, that’s okay, since with all the sightseeing we’ve been putting in on average 13k a day (or so says Dwayne’s iPhone). We walk this city a lot and every weekend we’ve been going away and spending a day exploring a different city, hiking a mountain, or both.

After a day in heavy hiking boots, completing a total of 27k on a hike yesterday, it feels so nice to go for an easy 7k in my light, barely there Merrells. We ran through our quiet neighbourhood passing a number of local pubs. We ran towards the Bavariapark and explored the large plaza right next to it, which is the place where the Oktoberfest takes place. We explored Ruhmenshalle palace which looks like something out of a Greek myth and has a gallery displaying marble busts of celebrated Bavarians. And in front of the palace is the grandiose bronze Bavaria statue. We ended with a quick run around the Sankt Paul church before heading back to our apartment.

When I started the training for my first marathon, my favourite part was the long runs which required a lot of creativity and route planning. Toronto is a pretty large city, but I was surprised just how far I could travel across the city in order to complete a 30k run. I got to explore so much of the city and see many new neighbourhoods and parks. Although, I am not currently running as far, it still is a lot of fun combining our runs with explorations of new parts of Munich. What is your favourite way of exploring new places? IMG_1614IMG_1613IMG_1584IMG_1589IMG_1594IMG_1595IMG_1597IMG_1605IMG_1612IMG_1608Screen Shot 2015-05-25 at 2.17.53 PM
